Voice mode

What it is

Voice mode lets you speak to Claude and hear it reply in a natural voice. It’s different from dictation: dictation types for you, voice mode is a spoken back-and-forth. It’s a beta feature, on every plan — Free, Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise — and Anthropic says it’s built to work best from your phone.

Where to find it

On desktop

Use voice mode is the sound-wave icon on the right of the composer, between Dictate (the microphone) and the Microphone chevron. It is present beside Dictate and Microphone on the inspected unified composer.

On the web

The same sound-wave icon in the same place on claude.ai. It isn’t offered in incognito chats.

How to use it

Open a chat and click Use voice mode — the sound-wave icon in the lower right of the chat window.
Speak. Claude answers out loud and the conversation carries on turn by turn.
Set which voice you hear from Settings → General → Voice, below.

Change the voice

Go to Settings → General and scroll to the Voice section. On the web it holds Language, Style and Speed; the desktop app has the same section in the same place, further down the pane. Your choice carries across chats.

Good to know

Beta. English is fully supported; other languages are themselves still in beta.
All plans, on Claude Mobile (iOS and Android), Claude Desktop and the web.
Voice conversations count towards your usual usage limits, based on your plan.
Three voice controls, three jobs. Dictate types what you say; Use voice mode is the spoken conversation; the Microphone chevron opens a menu of its own.
Hearing one answer isn’t the same as voice mode. On the web, every response in an open chat carries a Read aloud button in its action bar, next to Copy, Good response, Bad response and Retry. That reads one reply back to you without starting a conversation.
Switch between typing and talking mid-chat — voice mode is a mode of the composer, not a separate place. Close it and you’re back to the same conversation.

What’s changed recently

2026-10-07 — Use voice mode is present in both unified composers. Settings → General still exposes Language, Style and Speed; a voice conversation was not started.
2026-09-13 — Voice mode is on desktop. The Use voice mode button sits on the desktop composer in Chat mode on build 1.52386.3, and Anthropic’s article lists Claude Desktop alongside web and mobile. This page previously recorded desktop as not available.
2026-09-13 — Voice settings live under Settings → General → Voice, with Language, Style and Speed controls on the web. Languages beyond English are supported, in beta.
2026-09-13 — Added Read aloud, the per-response button in the web action bar that speaks a single reply — distinct from voice mode itself.
