Search across your chats

A modal that finds a past chat or project by what was in it, not by scrolling your history.

Available on
Desktop Web

What it is

Documentation update — 7 October 2026. Unified search covers chats and new conversations, but not older Cowork tasks. Find those by name in Recents.

One box that searches across your chats and your projects. It’s a modal on both platforms — it opens over whatever you were doing and closes back to it, so you never lose your place.

The modal is deliberately plain: one field, a list of results, and a close button. No filter chips, no scope tabs, no mode switch.

Where to find it

On desktop

  • Go → Search… in the macOS menu bar. A centred modal opens with a single field: Search chats and projects.

On the web

  • The Search button in the sidebar. The same modal opens; the page URL doesn’t change.

How to use it

The inspected web dialog filters by All, Artifacts, Sessions, Code, Projects and Scheduled and offers New session. Only the dialog controls were inspected; personal results were excluded.

  1. Open the modal.
  2. Type what you’re looking for.
  3. Pick a result to jump straight there, or press Close to go back to what you were doing.

Good to know

  • It covers projects, not just chats. The field says so: Search chats and projects.
  • It’s not a page you can link to. Because it’s a modal, there’s no shareable search URL on either platform.

What’s changed recently

  • 2026-10-07 — The sidebar Search control opens a dialog on both desktop and web with All, Artifacts, Sessions, Code, Projects and Scheduled filters, plus a New session action. Searches of private records were not performed.
  • 2026-09-13 — Search is a modal on both platforms, not a claude.ai/search page as this page previously said. The field is Search chats and projects, so it spans projects as well as chats. On desktop the entry point we could confirm is Go → Search… in the menu bar; the Cmd-Shift-F shortcut this page used to give could not be confirmed and has been removed rather than repeated. Two unsourced claims — that search covers message bodies rather than titles, and that archived chats are included — have also been dropped.
  • 2026-04-18 — Page created as part of the initial build.
