Claude Design
Anthropic Labs' conversational design tool — describe what you want, Claude builds it on a canvas. Web-only research preview.
What it is
Claude Design (by Anthropic Labs) is a visual design environment where you describe what you want — a dashboard, an onboarding flow, a landing page, a slide deck — and Claude builds it on a canvas you can edit alongside it.
The interface has two halves: a chat on the left, a canvas on the right. You iterate by talking to Claude in chat or by clicking directly on the canvas and leaving inline comments. Every project automatically picks up your organization’s design system, so output is on-brand without any per-project setup.
Available in research preview to Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise plans. Default off for Enterprise — an admin must turn it on.
Where to find it
On the web
claude.ai/design. Web-only; there is no desktop app for Claude Design today.
How to use it
Create your first project
- Open
claude.ai/designand start a new project. - Optionally attach context: screenshots, existing slide decks, wireframes, a code repository (link a subdirectory rather than a whole monorepo for large codebases).
- Describe what you want. A strong prompt covers goal, layout, content, and audience — e.g. “Create a dashboard showing monthly revenue with filters for region and product line.”
- Review what Claude renders on the canvas, then iterate.
- Export or share when ready.
Iterate with chat vs. inline comments
- Chat — broad changes: colour scheme, layout structure, new sections, alternative directions, accessibility review.
- Inline comments — click directly on an element and request a targeted change: padding, colour, component swap.
If inline comments go missing before Claude reads them (known issue), paste the same feedback into the chat instead.
To branch without losing your current work, tell Claude “Save what we have and try a completely different approach.”
Export and share
Click Export (upper right) to get:
.zipdownload- PPTX
- Send to Canva
- Standalone HTML
- Handoff to Claude Code (local or Claude Code Web)
You can also share within your organization via link — view-only, comment, or edit access.
Set up a design system (design leads)
A design system is what makes output on-brand. Only needs doing once per org.
- Open
claude.ai/design. - In the project picker, click the current organization in the lower-left, then select or create your organization. Complete onboarding.
- Upload source material: a codebase (e.g. a React component library), prototypes and screenshots, branded slide decks or PDFs, or individual assets (logos, colour palettes, typography specimens). One source is enough; more is better.
- Review the generated UI kit — colour palette, typography, components, layout patterns. Test with prompts like “Create a landing page for [your product].”
- Toggle Published on. Any new project in your organization will now use your design system instead of the default.
To revise the system later, open it from organization settings → Open → Remix in the upper right.

Pricing and usage
Claude Design is metered separately from regular Claude chat and Claude Code. It has its own weekly allowance, per user, that resets every seven days. Design activity never draws from your chat or Code limits.
- Pro — weekly allowance, suited to quick explorations and one-off use.
- Max 5x — semi-regular use (PMs, engineers making regular mock-ups).
- Max 20x — power use (designers and creatives).
- Team — each provisioned user gets a weekly allowance. Seat types: Standard and Premium. Admins can purchase extra usage.
- Enterprise (legacy seat-based) — same structure as Team; extra usage available.
- Enterprise (usage-based) — bills at standard API rates under your existing agreement. Anthropic is offering a one-time credit covering ~20 prompts per user (expires July 17).
Allowances are granted per user, not pooled at the org. Only users explicitly provisioned for Claude Design (via custom roles, where applicable) receive one.
Admin controls (Team / Enterprise)
- Turn Claude Design on at Organization settings → Capabilities → Claude Design (under Anthropic Labs). Default off for Enterprise.
- Control broad-access vs design-system-editing rights separately via custom roles — grant editing to trusted designers, general access to the rest of the team.
- Anthropic recommends a phased rollout: design system setup (2–4 trusted designers) → design team onboarding → product and UX → broader org.
- Multiple design systems per organization are supported (different brands, sub-teams).
- No audit logs or usage tracking yet — Claude Design is an Anthropic Labs release. Track adoption qualitatively during rollout.
- No data residency support yet. Uploaded assets are stored persistently under the same retention and deletion policies as other Anthropic enterprise products.
Limitations
- Web only (
claude.ai/design); no desktop app today. - Inline comments can occasionally disappear before Claude reads them — fall back to chat.
- Compact layout view can trigger save errors; switch to full view and retry.
- Very large codebases can cause lag — link specific subdirectories.
- On “chat upstream error”, start a new chat tab within the same project.
